In 1994, InnerCity Struggle (ICS) became an independent center to meet the Eastside’s long-standing need for an organization through which the community could demand increased public resources, equity, and justice. ICS’s work is centered in four communities: Boyle Heights, unincorporated East Los Angeles, El Sereno and Lincoln Heights. For 18 years, ICS has worked to promote safe, healthy and non-violent communities by organizing youth, families and community residents in LA’s Eastside to work toward economic and social justice. Early in our history, we recognized public education on the Eastside has historically failed to serve as a vehicle for improving the quality of life of individuals and families. As a result, ICS sees educational justice as key to our mission of working with the community for economic and social justice. The core work of ICS is developing engaged and informed youth and parent leaders who can act as agents for creating quality schools and improving their community. ICS provides the leadership training, knowledge and skills necessary for residents to win public policy changes through collective civic action. Through these efforts, ICS has secured policy changes that have increased opportunities for young people to access a quality education.

InnerCity Struggle (ICS) is seeking 20 energetic individuals with voter engagement experience to take on a 15-day civic engagement program (CEP) comprised of canvassing in the East Los Angeles area. The program will begin on Monday, May 13th and will end on Saturday, June 1st. Canvassers will contact voters over the phone and in person via door to door canvassing. Canvassers will work a total of 5 hours per day for a total of 25 hours per week.

Responsibilities include:

Attend a mandatory orientation on Thursday, May 9th from 3:00-6:00 p.m.

Arrive on time and ready to Canvass during designated hours
Commit to all 15 days, no absences will be allowed.

Follow ICS’ Civic Engagement Program Script to engage voters

Identify and accurately document voter responses

Qualifications:

Bilingual English/Spanish a must

Licensed driver with own transportation preferred

Excellent communication skills

Ability to use a computer to document voter responses
Ability to conduct a Civic Engagement questionnaire over the phone with East Los Angeles voters
Ability to conduct a Civic Engagement questionnaire door to door with East Los Angeles voters.

Interest and willingness to engage with voters from East Los Angeles
Experience in voter engagement or community organizing

Must have verifiable identification
