East L.A. Vote
Voto East L.A.
InnerCity Struggle has made strives to educate voters in the Eastside to bring a new and more progressive voice into the Los Angeles and California electorate. ICS voter education and registration activities have drawn huge numbers of residents to participate because they embrace people of color and immigrants who are typically shunned by the political process. These events have sparked a generation of activists with energy to participate in a movement.
In the fall of 2008, InnerCity Struggle focused on educating voters to vote No on Proposition 6, No on Proposition 9 and Yes on Measure Q a local school bond. One of ICS's key organizing issues is Public Education and fighting against criminalization of youth of color. Propositions 6 & 9 would have essentially shifted resources and funding away from critical safety nets, specifically public education in California and perpetuated the criminalization of communities of color by increasing punitive measures. LAUSD's School Bond proposed to invest over $7 billion toward school refurbishment of existing facilities, including continuing the construction of much needed new schools- both important to improving educational conditions in East Los Angeles. Proposition 6 was overwhelming defeated and the $7 billion school bond passed. ICS youth members actively supported in turning out over 80% of supportive voters in targeted precincts on Election Day- over 3,200 people!
We will continue to grow and strengthen our civic engagement efforts in the coming years.
